The Ladybug Event: Where Confidence Grows and Community Comes Alive

17 April 2026

The Ladybug Event

Real Skills. Real Confidence. Pure Experience.

Don’t let the name fool you, there’s a powerful meaning behind it. Years ago, I was told by an insurance professional that a life insurance policy written for a woman who had never been married or had children was referred to as a “Ladybug Policy.” I can’t say for certain how widely that term is used, but it stayed with me. It made me pause and think… what does a ladybug really represent?

The more I reflected on it, the more it made sense.

A ladybug may be small, but it is resilient, self-sufficient, and impactful. It survives, adapts, and contributes quietly but meaningfully to its environment. In many ways, it mirrors the strength of an independent person, especially women who are building their own paths, overcoming challenges, and creating something meaningful in the world.

Ladybugs also undergo a remarkable transformation from larvae to a fully formed, vibrant adult. That metamorphosis became a symbol for us: growth, change, and becoming something stronger and more beautiful through life’s journey.

That symbolism is what inspired the Ladybug Event.

What started as a small, heartfelt gathering has grown into something truly special. Over the years, the event has evolved into a celebration of connection, support, and empowerment. It brings together individuals from all walks of life many of whom share stories of resilience, personal growth, and new beginnings.

As the event has grown, so has the depth of experience we are able to offer.

In 2024, we were honored to welcome Tracy Edwards as our keynote speaker. Tracy is best known for skippering the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Race aboard Maiden, an achievement that reshaped perceptions of women in offshore sailing. Her story of perseverance, leadership, and challenging the status quo aligned perfectly with the spirit of the Ladybug Event. She didn’t just speak about sailing, she spoke about courage, determination, and believing in yourself when others may not.

In 2025, we continued that momentum with an incredible lineup of keynote speakers. Lisa McDonald, a former America’s Cup crew member, brought a wealth of high-performance sailing experience and insight into teamwork at the highest level of the sport. She was joined by Joan Porter, also an America’s Cup veteran, whose experience and perspective added depth and inspiration for both seasoned sailors and those just beginning their journey.

We were also honored to have Chris Parker join us, well known throughout the cruising community for his expertise in marine weather and passage-making. For many sailors, Chris is a trusted voice guiding them safely across oceans, and having him share his knowledge in person added tremendous value to the event.

Beyond the speakers, the Ladybug Event has become a true hands-on learning experience. In the 2025 Ladybug Event alone, we hosted 39 different workshops and seminars designed to build confidence and capability on the water. These ranged from our Medical at Sea workshop, focused on preparedness and decision-making in critical situations, to technical sessions like Electrical Systems, covering everything from pedestal power to onboard battery management.

We also offered workshops on rigging, dockside line handling, anchoring techniques, sail trim, navigation, and more. Whether someone was brand new to sailing or looking to refine advanced skills, there was something for everyone. The goal has always been to create an environment where learning feels approachable, practical, and empowering.

A major highlight of the event was our two full days of “Get to Know Jeanneau,” which created a boat show-style experience right on the docks. Attendees had the opportunity to step aboard, explore different models, ask questions, and truly connect with the boats in a meaningful way. It wasn’t just about viewing, it was about understanding, envisioning, and dreaming. We also offered demo sails Sunday mid to late afternoon.

We then brought everything together on the water with our Ladybug Regatta, a celebration of skill, teamwork, and camaraderie. This year’s regatta featured three Jeanneau 349s competing in a one-design race format, allowing for a true test of teamwork and sailing ability.

Aboard Zephyr, a Jeanneau 349, we had Catherine Guidar from Jeanneau America sailing alongside Lisa McDonald (veteran America’s Cup crew), Lisa Mauer (St Augustine Sailing Captain and sailing instructor), and Beth London (from our Women on the Water program). On Rendezvous With Destiny, also a Jeanneau 349, Joan Porter (veteran America’s Cup crew) was joined by Kim Walther (St Augustine Sailing Captain and sailing instructor)  and Lauren Schroeder (St Augustine Sailing Captain and sailing instructor). Rounding out the fleet was A La Mer, with Dale Edgar (St Augustine Sailing Captain and Sailing Instructor), Mark Emerson (All Points Yacht Sales salesperson), James Pucket (from St Augustine Sailing Crew Membership Program), and Andrew (the Yacht Rigger) aboard.

With all vessels being the same model, the focus shifted entirely to communication, strategy, and crew dynamics. It made for an exciting and competitive race, ultimately finishing with Zephyr taking first place, followed by Rendezvous With Destiny, and A La Mer rounding out the fleet.

Adding to the experience, we hosted a dedicated spectator vessel with 39 guests on board, giving them a front-row seat right along the course. Being able to witness the race up close created an energy that carried throughout the entire event, connecting those on the water with those cheering them on.

Each evening, we gathered as a community. These moments of connection sharing stories, reflecting on the day, and simply enjoying time together are a meaningful part of what makes the event so special. It’s where friendships are formed, confidence is built, and people realize they are not alone in their journey.

We close the event with our Sunday awards dinner, which is always a highlight. It’s not just about recognizing performance on the water, but celebrating growth, courage, and participation. There’s a sense of pride in the room not just for what was accomplished, but for the willingness to step outside of comfort zones and try something new.

Each year, we’ve seen the Ladybug Event grow not just in size (from 30 to this year 98 participants not including staff), but in purpose and impact. What remains at its core is the same: creating a welcoming, judgment-free space where people feel seen, supported, and inspired.

The Ladybug Event is about more than a name it’s about honoring the quiet strength in all of us, celebrating transformation, and building a community that lifts each other up.

We’re incredibly grateful for how it has grown and for every person who has been a part of its journey.
