Sun Fast 3300 Finds Success at 2023 Ida Lewis Distance Race

Since the very beginning, the Sun Fast 3300 has consistently found its way onto the podium throughout the world. From Australia to the UK to the USA, short-handed or full crew, amateur or professional, the Sun Fast 3300, like the famous race horse Secretariat, has a nose to win.

The Ida Lewis Distance Race, hosted by the Ida Lewis Yacht Club in Newport, RI and sponsored by Jeanneau dealer, Bluenose Yacht Sales, had two Sun Fast 3300’s on the starting line this year, ARKANA, skippered by Glenn Walters, owner of Bluenose, and AVALON, skippered by Ken Read, President of North Sails. Glenn and his crew of three, which included Anton Webre of Norton Yacht Sales, also a Jeanneau dealer, competed in the crewed division, while Ken Read along with his brother Brad Read, competed in the double-handed division.

For Ken Read, this was his third time racing and winning the event’s growing double-handed division, aboard the Sun Fast 3300. “This was the best Ida Lewis Distance Race course ever," says Ken, who has won many sailing championship titles and explained that his class’s course (for eight boats) was 188 nm. "A real variety of angles and conditions; going to places outside of Rhode Island Sound; great course length; and plenty of breeze and big waves. It was fun, challenging, and refreshing. And we finished in 26 hours which is pretty close to the published goal of a 24-hour race.”

For Glenn and his crew, who finished second in their division, the conditions proved ideal for the Sun Fast 3300. “I’ve been involved with the Sun Fast 3300 now for the past three years, and I can tell you without hesitation, that this boat never ceases to amaze me’ says Glenn. “Last year I raced the 3300 in the Newport Bermuda Race and took second in our division and then I had the pleasure of watching Sarah Stone and Cat Hunt race it back from Bermuda in the double-handed division and win the whole thing! It’s truly a remarkable machine” Says Glenn.

From all of us at Team Jeanneau, congratulations on your fantastic results and thanks for your continued support of the Sun Fast 3300!!
